Obituary for Bernard J. Zajicek

BERNARD J. ZAJICEK, 85, of Fulton, IL, died Monday, March 4, 2024, at The Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, IA.


A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton, IL, with a Celebration of Life immediately following the memorial mass in the church's hall.  At Bernie’s request, his body has been donated to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for scientific study. The Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. A memorial has been established to River Bend Athletic Boosters.


Bernie was born August 19, 1938, in Chicago, IL, to Edward and Josephine (Brecka) Zajicek. He attended Morton High School in Cicero, IL. He served in the United States Navy. Bernie married Joyce M. Warner on September 16, 1961, in Cicero, IL. His professional journey took him from being an underground cable splicer and installer for ComEd in the Chicagoland Area to becoming the owner and operator of BJ Auto in Fulton. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He coached basketball at St. Barbara's in Brookfield, IL, and coached baseball when his children were little. Bernie was a dedicated Chicago Bears fan and was a proud supporter of the Fulton Steamers, being selected as a “Super Steamer Fan”. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Bernie was an avid fisherman.


Survivors include his wife, Joyce; one daughter, Judy (Frank) Ruiz of St. Rose, LA; two sons, Bernard E. (Molly) Zajicek of Clinton, IA and Jeffrey A. (Carla) Zajicek of Fulton, IL; twenty foster children that Bernie & Joyce lovingly cared for while in Fulton, IL; six grandchildren, Megan Ruiz, Katelyn Zajicek, Carrie Zajicek, Heidi Zajicek, Joe Zajicek and Andy Zajicek; four great-grandchildren, Jaydynn Zajicek, Eli and Cooper Zajicek and Tucker Zajicek; one brother, Jim Hare of Palatine, IL.


He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward Zajicek and Alan Hare.
