Obituary for Charles A. Sonnenberg
CHARLES A. SONNENBERG, 85, of Prophetstown, IL, died Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, November 29, 2019, at First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown with visitation from 10:30 AM until the time of the service. Pastor Chelsey Olson-Weech will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded and the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established by the family.
Charles was born October 1, 1934, in Chicago, IL, to C.A. “Red” and Mildred C. (Anderson) Sonnenberg. He was educated in the Prophetstown Grade Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Prophetstown High School. Charles attended Bradley University and was a ROTC Cadet. He married Patricia L. Church on August 27, 1954, at The Congregational Church in Prophetstown. As a child, Charles at times was able to travel with his parents with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He was an usher at the Prophetstown Town Theater during high school. Charles painted with Alphonse DeMay for 25 years. He later worked as a custodian for the Prophetstown Grade Schools for 22 years until retiring in 1996. Charles and his high school track relay team broke the record for the 880 relay and held that record for a year and he held the record for the individual 220 until 1975. He was a quarterback and team captain in six man football and was a co-captain for basketball. Charles was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. He was known around town for his jokes and sense of humor and was a lifelong Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. Charles enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Pat; four children, Brian (Beth) Sonnenberg, Brenda (Steven) Wankerl, Cheryl Davis, and Curt A. (Sabrina) Sonnenberg all of Prophetstown, IL; eleven grandchildren, Jeremy, Andrew, and Megan; Ian; Megan, Blake, Dalton and Logan; Corrin, Leslie and Carl; twelve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a future son-in-law, Chad Walker.
