Obituary for Florence Lillian Bielema
FLORENCE LILLIAN BIELEMA, 91, of Fulton, IL, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at her home in Fulton. Florence was born November 30, 1919, in Thomson, IL, to Reuben and Hazel (Bennett) Green. She was educated in the rural Carroll and Whiteside County schools. She married Claus Bielema on January 10, 1936, in Fulton. He died March 31, 1999. Florence was employed at the Swift Company in Clinton, IA, as a housekeeper in Wheaton, IL, then as a midwife for Dr. Snyder in Fulton. She worked at the Fulton Bakery and also at the Dutchboy Restaurant in Fulton. She, along with her husband Claus, constructed the Pine Motel in Fulton, which they operated until the 1980"s. She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, where she was active in the Rebecca Society and taught Sunday School. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends and was known to many as "Cookie Grandma". She was a very hard worker and enjoyed many hobbies, like crocheting, reading and working in her garden. She also enjoyed sitting in her swing and watching the squirrels in her yard and listening to the birds sing. Florence loved to sing. She was involved in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and enjoyed traveling with her husband. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Maurice) Bronkema of Forreston, IL; two sons, Harold (Linda) Bielema of Albany, IL and Gordon Bielema of Fulton, IL; twenty one grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; three great great great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Smith of Fulton and Mrs. Evelyn Housenga of Morrison, IL; one niece raised from infancy by Claus and Florence, Dawn (Michael) Bell of Rockport, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claus; one son, Fay Bielema; two grandchildren, Theresa and Terry Bielema; one great grandchild, Devin Bronkema; one daughter-in-law, Susan Bielema; two great great great grandchildren; four sisters and three brothers.
