Obituary for Gerald Meier
GERALD "JERRY" F. MEIER, 79, of Albany, IL passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018, at his home, after suffering from Parkinson’s disease the past 12 years.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the Albany United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Toni Lucas. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lusk Memorial Cemetery in Albany. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Albany United Methodist Church.
Jerry was born on March 19, 1939 at his family home in southern Wisconsin near Apple River, IL to Otto and Ruth (Fiedler) Meier. After graduating from high school in Warren, IL, Jerry attended college in Platteville, WI, where he played football. He graduated in May of 1963 with a degree in Agricultural Business. He met his future wife, Penny Parsons, at Platteville College and they were married on November 30, 1963, in Oregon, IL, at the United Methodist Church. After college, Jerry moved to Albert Lea, MN to work for Wilson & Company as a hog buyer. He and Penny made their home in New Ulm, MN until July 1969 when he was transferred to Albany, IL. He managed that office until Nov. 1975 and then joined First Trust and Savings Bank in Albany, where he had the privilege of serving as Vice President and Agricultural Representative, until retiring in 2005.
Jerry was a member of the Albany United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Albany Lion’s Club and was involved in many other community services. Sports were a big part of Jerry’s life, and he held a special love for the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. He also loved his little yellow truck. He will long be remembered for his warm smile and firm handshake. Jerry was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and throughout his life he was a father-figure to many children who passed through his home and others in the community.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Penny; two sons and eight grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) of Indianapolis, IN, and their children Jonah, Alexis, Jackson & Evan; Erick (Brandy) of Springfield, MO and their children Isaac, Lucas, Ella & Abigail; sisters-in-law Charlotte Meier of Dubuque, IA and Jean Meier of Madison, WI, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marvin & Kenneth Meier; one sister, Doris Quakenbush.
