Obituary for Gertrude VanZuiden
GERTRUDE VANZUIDEN, 100, of The Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, IA, died Saturday, September 14, 2019 at The Alverno.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Scott Stephan of Second Reformed Church in Fulton. A visitation will be held prior, from 9:00 a.m. until the start of the service. Interment will be in the Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton. A memorial to Second Reformed Church has been established.
Gertrude was born September 15, 1918 in Albany, IL, to Rubertus and Jennie (Venema) Klooster. She was educated in the Albany schools. On June 3, 1941 she married Lewis VanZuiden in Garden Plain, IL. He died August 16, 1983. Gert was a homemaker and she, along with her husband Lewis, farmed in the Garden Plain area until 1972. At one point she was employed as a clerk at Kline’s Department Store in Clinton, and also had worked at Klooster Plumbing and Heating in Fulton. Gert was a member of Second Reformed Church, where she was a member and former president of the Ladies Aide. She also taught Sunday school and catechism and was a member of the Willing Workers. She loved putting puzzles together, doing crossword puzzles and playing cards.
Survivors include one daughter, Lori (Dave) Handley of Cedar Rapids, IA; two sons, Arlyn (Jane) VanZuiden of Morrison, IL and Lauren (Janet) VanZuiden of Winnetka, IL; one daughter-in-law, Cindy VanZuiden of Albany, IL; eight grandchildren, Lisa Caminitti, Todd VanZuiden, Shawn VanZuiden, Troy VanZuiden, Clint (Carrie) VanZuiden, Mitch (Nicole) VanZuiden, Karla (Erik) Bartels and Greg VanZuiden; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister, Alberta Brondyke of Clinton, IA, and one sister-in-law, Louise Klooster of Fulton, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; one son, Randy VanZuiden; two sisters, Dena Wilkens and Jeannette Wilkens; two brothers, Gerald and Harold Klooster.
