Obituary for Jeannette Wilkens
JEANNETTE WILKENS, 89, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, IL, died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the nursing home. Jeannette was born July 25, 1920, in Albany, IL, to Rubertus "Bert" and Jennie (Venema) Klooster. She was educated in the rural schools of Albany and Fulton, IL. She married John A. Wilkens on April 5, 1941 in Fulton. He died April 17, 2004. After her father"s death, she worked full time with her brother Gerald on the family farm for several years. After marriage she became a homemaker and she also farmed along with her husband in the Albany and Newton, IL areas until retirement in 1970, when they moved to Fulton, IL. She was a former member of Newton Zion Reformed Church of Erie, IL, where she was active in all the church programs and was a member of the Ladies Aid. She taught in all the junior church programs, including Junior R.C.Y.C, Catechism, Sunday School, and Bible School. After retiring from farming and moving to Fulton, Jennie became a member of First Reformed Church, were she again became active in the Helping Hands Society and Pastoral Visitation. She also taught Sunday School and Bible School. Jeannette enjoyed baking, crocheting, reading, and spending time with her family. She also found joy in helping other people. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Clarence "Shorty") Wiersema of Fulton, IL and Karen (Paul) Weber of Andover, IA; one son, Robert (Sheila) Wilkens of Fulton, IL; five grandchildren, Kevin (Cari) Wiersema, Kristi (Kurt) Heun, Brian (Amy) Weber, Brad (KaCee) Weber and Amie Wilkens; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Van Zuiden and Alberta (Jay) Brondyke, both of Fulton, IL; one brother, Harold (Louise) Klooster of Fulton, IL; two step sisters, Jeannette Balk of Fulton, IL and Harriet Norman of Erie, IL; one step brother, Francis (Thelma) VenHuizen of Morrison, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one great grandson, Garrett Weber; one brother, Gerald Klooster; one sister Dena Wilkens; two step sisters Grace Strating and Catherine Dykstra; two step brothers, Jake VenHuizen and Fred VenHuizen.
