Obituary for Leroy J. Balk
LEROY J. BALK, 84, of 1900 10th Street, Silvis, IL, formerly of Fulton, died Monday Novermber 23, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus in Silvis, IL. Leroy was born October 8th 1925 in Garden Plain Township to Roy and Tena (Damhoff) Balk. He was educated in the Garden Plain and Erie, IL schools, graduating from Erie High School in 1943. He married LaVerta M. Borgman on April 22, 1948 in Fulton. Leroy farmed and fed cattle in Garden Plain Township, residing on the family farm for almost 80 years. Leroy was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, where he served as a Deacon of the Consistory, and Treasurer of the Sunday school for many years. Leroy also served as a trustee for Garden Plain Township for several years. Leroy retired from farming approximately 15 years ago. Leroy deeply loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them as well as attending their many activities. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda (Danny) Lipes of Bettendorf, IA; one son, Lavern (Sandra) Balk of Milan, IL; six grandchildren, Aaron, Kyle, Adam, and Megan Balk of Milan; Jason Lipes of New Jersey and Julie (Jeff) Willy of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his wife LaVerta, parents Roy and Tena, and infant brother Harold.
