Obituary for Louis A. Buikema
LOUIS A. BUIKEMA, 88, of 723 " 2nd Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at his home. Louis was born April 7, 1923, in Garden Plain Township, IL, to Louis M. and Mary (Newendyke) Buikema. He was educated in the Lockhart School in Garden Plain. He served in the United States Navy during WWII on the destroyer USS Wedderburn DD684, for 36 months in the Pacific. He married Helen M. Remrey on February 26, 1948 in Clinton, IA. Louis was employed at Agrico-Chemical in Fulton, retiring after 48 years of employment. He was an active 64 year member of the Fulton American Legion Post #402 where he held several different positions. Louis enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, gardening and woodworking. Survivors include his wife, Helen; two daughters, Cheryl (Gary) Green and Vicki (Dan) Bly, both of Fulton; two sons, Jeff (Brenda) Buikema of Clinton, IA and Tim Buikema of Albany, IL; thirteen grandchildren, Kelly (Greg) Strossner, Casey (Cristina) Green, Chris (Kathy) Green, Kari (Chris) Gassman; Shawn Bly, Aaron (Beth) Bly, Tim (Cinda) Bly; Jarimie Buikema, Courtney Buikema, Holly (Matthew) Carlson, Nathan Buikema; Jason (Domini) Buikema, Jenna Buikema; twenty-four great grandchildren. Louis was preceded in death by eight sisters, Winnie Van Zuiden, Tena Sissing, Jennie Beckman, Nellie Klimstra, Lucy Pessman-Sissing, Dorothy Poel, Luella Deelsnyder, and one in infancy; four brothers, Henry, Walter, and Marion Buikema, and one in infancy.
