Obituary for Michael C. "Barney" Olinger
MICHAEL C. “BARNEY” OLINGER, 74, of Prophetstown, IL, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 26, 2023, at home, surrounded by his family, after a battle with cancer.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the Prophetstown United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joey Garcea officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. A memorial has been established.
Barney was born October 19, 1949, in Morrison, IL, to Gaylord E. and Norma M. (Upton) Olinger. He attended Lyndon grade schools and was a 1967 graduate of Lyndon High School. He married Beth A. Combs on August 23, 1974, in Prophetstown. Barney worked for Prophetstown Township as the Road Commissioner for 46 years. In, addition, he owned and operated Olinger Trucking in Prophetstown for 20 years. Barney was an avid outdoorsman, with a particular love for hunting, fishing and clay shooting. He held memberships in the Morrison, Coleta and DeWitt sportsman clubs. Barney was the assistant coach for the Prophets High School shooting team since 2016. He was also passionate about playing pool, he played in pool leagues multiple nights a week and even traveled to Las Vegas to shoot. Barney took great pride and happiness in spending time with his family and supporting his grandchildren in all of their activities.
Survivors include his wife, Beth; one son, Gabe (Nicole) Olinger of Prophetstown; two grandchildren, Gavin and Avery Olinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Donald Scott; one brother, Perry Olinger.
