Obituary for Richard L. Dick Hummel
RICHARD L. "DICK" HUMMEL, 80, of 100 Circle Drive, Prophetstown, IL, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Morrison Community Hospital, Morrison, IL. Dick was born August 9, 1929 in Prophetstown, IL, to Robert J. and Mary L. (Martin) Hummel. He was educated in the Prophetstown grade school and was a 1947 graduate of Prophetstown High School. He also attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948, serving during the Korean Conflict until 1952. He married Janice M. Olinger on October 3, 1954 in Erie, IL. Dick was employed by the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Company, Mulcay Plumbing and Ace Hardware both of Prophetstown. He then owned and operated Chuck"s Place Restaurant in Prophetstown. He was later employed by B&B Builders, Woolahan Lumber Company in Rock Falls, IL, and Frary Lumber & Supply in Prophetstown. Most recently, he was employed by Yarborough Electric in Prophetstown. Dick was a member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church and the Prophetstown American Legion Post #522. He was a Little League coach for several years and had also served as a Cub Scout Master and Boy Scout Leader. Dick served as first ward alderman on the Prophetstown City Council for several years and also as a two term mayor of Prophetstown. Survivors include his wife, Janice; two daughters, Claudia (Don) Michaels of Grayslake, IL and JoEllen (Barry) Morphew of Prophetstown; two sons, Paul Hummel of Prophetstown and Daniel (Michele) Hummel of Waukegan, IL; seven grandchildren, Sean Michaels, Shannon Michaels, Nicholas (Gina) Morphew, Bobbie Blumhoff, Mitchell Hummel, Randee Hummel, and Joshua Hummel; two great granddaughters, Hanna and Isabelle Blumhoff; three sisters, Vicki (Bill) Moore of St. Petersburg, FL; Suzanne Adams of Prophetstown; and Nann (David) Johnson of Nashville, TN; three brothers, Wiley (Becky) Hummel of Geneseo, IL; Elwood Hummel and Louis (Betty) Hummel both of Prophetstown. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Andrew James Hummel and one brother, Robert W. Hummel.
