Obituary for Robert L. Cassens
ROBERT L. “BOB” CASSENS, 92, of Prophetstown, IL, died Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2018 at the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, officiated by interim Pastor Susan Davenport. A visitation will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 9th at the First Lutheran Church. The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.
Bob was born September 2, 1926 in Sterling, IL, to LeRoy “Red” and Lena (Beck) Cassens. He was educated in the Hume and Tampico grade schools and graduated from Tampico High School in 1944. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. He married Geraldine Koehler on January 8, 1949; they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this January. In his early years Bob worked with his father at Cassens’ Hydraulic in Tampico and also with Dever Construction, building homes in the Prophetstown and Tampico areas. Bob and Geraldine then farmed in Loraine Township in Henry County, IL until retiring. He served as Loraine Twp. Supervisor and also on the Henry County Board in the 1960’s and 70’s. He was a member of the Tampico Historical Society, Tampico Alumni Association, Henry County Farm Bureau, and First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. Bob enjoyed farming, traveling and camping with his wife, and also working in his shop. He especially loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Memorials to the First Lutheran Church and Tampico Historical Society have been established.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; one son, James (Nancy) Cassens of Geneseo, IL; two daughters, Vicky (Steve) Vandike of Geneseo, IL and Susan (Randy) Skelton of Prophetstown, IL; six grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Aussieker, Emily Skelton, Nathan (Heather) Vandike, Kelsey (Lyndon) Kayess, Valerie (Ian) Kline and Christopher (Melanie) Cassens; six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Meyers and Beverly Berge. The family would like to thank the staff at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center and Vitas Hospice for their care and assistance.
