Obituary for Wiley M. Hummel
WILEY M. HUMMEL, 94, of Geneseo, IL, died Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at UnityPoint Health Trinity, Rock Island Campus, in Rock Island, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2019 at the Prophetstown United Methodist Church, preceded by a memorial visitation from 11:00 until the time of the service, with Rev. Mark Meyers officiating. The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home of Prophetstown, IL, is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. Wiley was born July 18, 1925 in Bureau County, IL, to Robert J. and Mary L. (Martin) Hummel. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County and Prophetstown grade schools, and graduated from Prophetstown High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army. On February 26, 1950 he married Shirley Ann “Becky” Lancaster in Prophetstown. Wiley was first employed at the Rock Island Arsenal and later worked at General Electric in Morrison, where he had seven patents. He was a member of the Prophetstown American Legion Post #522, and was also a member, secretary and president of the Morrison Sportsman’s Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morrison. Wiley enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. After retirement he enjoyed operating his apple orchard.
Survivors include his wife, Becky; one daughter, Jeanette (Dave) Damp of Milan, IL; one son, Barry Hummel of Geneseo, IL; two grandchildren, Aaron King and Bilan (Chad) Hockers; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Vicki (Bill) Moore of St. Petersburg, FL, and Mrs. Nan Johnson of Nashville, TN; one brother, Louis (Betty) Hummel of Prophetstown.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Sue Adams; three brothers, Robert, Richard and Elwood Hummel; twin great grandchildren, Noah and Liam Hockers.
