Obituary for Gene A. Klimstra
Gene A. Klimstra, 91, of Fulton, IL, died Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at his home.

His memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, July 5, 2021, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Stephan, Pastor of CrossView Church in Fulton officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial has been established.

Gene was born May 30, 1930, in Clinton, IA to Paul and Effie (Ottens) Klimstra. He was educated in the Morrison Grade Schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School in Morrison, IL. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Central College in Pella, IA. He then received two master’s degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA in Library Science and Education. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. On July 15, 1955, he married Theo Vermeer in Sioux Center, IA. She died in February of 2008. He later married Carol L. Weiss-Kolk on July 28, 2008, in Fulton, IL. Gene was employed as an English teacher at the Lyons Middle School in Clinton, IA. He then taught Library Science at Mankato State University in Mankato, MN and finished his career at West High School in Iowa City as Library Director. Gene was a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton where he was a member of the choir. He was an avid bicyclist and participated in RAGBRAI multiple times. He also enjoyed taking rides on his motor scooter and photography. Gene spent many winters in Apache Junction, AZ.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; one daughter, Robin Kelley of Mt. Carroll, IL; one son, Randy (Vicki) Klimstra of Norman, OK; two sisters, Carol (Bill) Dearinger of Wayland, MI and Mary (Ron) Maner of Savannah, GA; three stepsons, Kevin (Jan) Kolk of Houston, TX, Dan (Beth) Kolk of McFarland, WI and Michael (Nancy) Kolk of Sugar Grove, IL; eight step grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Theo.
