Obituary for Albert L. Benedict Jr.
ALBERT L. BENEDICT, JR., 92, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, May 19, 2014 in Morrison, IL. Al was born October 12, 1921, in Morrison, IL, to Albert and Mary (Popkin) Benedict, Sr. He attended Morrison Grade Schools and later graduated from High School in Wisconsin. Al enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Dec. 20, 1941. He served in Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Siapan, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire until discharge Oct. 2, 1945. He was wounded in action in the Gilbert Islands and was awarded The Purple Heart. He married Arlene E. Montgomery on Nov. 23, 1946 in Morrison, IL. Al went to work at the US Post Office in Morrison on Sept. 1, 1946 and served as a clerk for 9 years. He was a rural letter carrier for 25 years. He served as delegate to State and National Conventions for a number of years, and was chosen as Illinois Carrier of the Year in 1974. He then served as the State Secretary for 8 years. Al was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, where he served as treasurer, elder, and was always ready to volunteer when help was needed. He was a member of the Morrison American Legion Post #328 where he served as an officer on the Board, and was the Financial Chairman. He was also a member of the Morrison VFW #8281. Al was a member of the Morrison Dunlap Lodge #321 AF & AM since 1946 and served as Master in 1955 and also Secretary for a number of years. He served as Deputy Grand Master for the 6th Northern District of Illinois Masons. He was elected Trustee for Mt. Pleasant Township and served for 8 years, then elected to Supervisor where he served for 20 years. He also served as Treasurer for the Morrison Historical Society. Al enjoyed playing cards and was still bowling at age 91. Survivors include his wife, Arlene; one granddaughter, Alison (Jon) Manternach of Virginia; two great-grandsons, Luke and Mark Manternach. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy and a son, David.
