Obituary for Marjorie J. Gardner
MARJORIE J. GARDNER, 94, of Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center, Prophetstown, IL, died Sunday, October 6, 2013, at the center. Marj was born July 14, 1919, in Hooppole, IL, to Walter E. and Anna (Anderson) Gibson. She was a graduate and valedictorian of the 1937 Class of Lyndon High School in Lyndon, IL. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics from Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Marj married Dean C. Gardner on February 27, 1942, in Prophetstown, IL. He died September 10, 1989. Marj along with her late husband, Dean, owned and operated the former Gardner Funeral Home in Prophetstown for many years. She was a lifetime member of the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, a member of the church"s choir, WELCA, and served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Lyndon Ladies Club and was a charter member of the Lyndon Historical Society. Marj served as a member of the Board of Directors of Self Help Enterprises in Sterling, IL and the Sauk Valley Community College Foundation Board. Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Gardner of Prophetstown, IL; one son, Garth (Kelly) Gardner of Woodstock, CT; three grandchildren, Bailey Gardner and Fiance, Capt. Ted Rose, USMC, Lindsay Gardner, and Sullivan Gardner; and one sister, Mary (Lee) Bierman of Belvidere, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean; two daughters, Marcia and Francia in infancy; two sisters, Dorine Johnson and Kelly Gibson; two brothers, W.B. "Bud" Gibson and Allen G. Gibson.
